Geneva International Airport, also called “Cointrin” is located in the Northwestern part of Geneva, in Cointrin town.  As a traveler, you will not be disappointed by the services offered by this airport: Geneva International Airport has been confirmed as the most efficient airport in Europe in June 2011, for the second consecutive year. In this regard, Geneva Airport offers many surprises to passengers:

About Geneva Airport:

The only airport which serves two countries
Running along the Swiss-French border, this airport has the unique characteristic of being split between two countries. Actually, it is a Swiss airport which also has a French sector. Thus, it may be accessed both from Switzerland and from France. Passengers which make use o the French part of the airport do not have to pass through Swiss customs, if they remain on the French side.

Another surprising fact is that, because of this strange arrangement, Geneva is considered a European Union Freight Hub although Switzerland is not part of the European Union.

Transport service
The distance between the airport and the city centre is of only 4 km. Bus line 10 leaves to Geneva every 10 minutes. While bus line 18 leaves to the United Nations every 30 minutes.

Also, the Geneva airport is served by a train station which connects the airport with many cities in Switzerland. A train trip to the city centre takes 6 minutes.

The transport from the airport to Geneva by any public means of transportation is free of charge, courtesy of the Geneva international airport. Free tickets are valable 80 minutes and may be picked up from the machines positioned in the luggage claim area.

Good to know about Geneva Airport:

Useful information
Since Switzerland is not part of the European Union, Euro is not the official currency of the country. You may use Euros when paying but all the prices are expressed in the country’s own currency, the Swiss Franc (CHF).

The checked in luggage must not exceed 20 kg for the economy class passengers, 30 kg for the business class passengers and  40 kg for the first class travelers.

Small animals may be transported in the cabin if their weigh is of 5 kg or under, with prior authorization from the airline.

Surprising Facilities
Facilities offered by Geneva airport are an example for much larger airports all over the world. They are so many that deserve a section of their own:

Geneva airport offers free WiFi to passengers.

Children will have a wonderful time in the specially designed play area which may be accessed for free. The play area is situated in the transit zone.

While their children are playing, mothers may take advantage of the waiting period by going to the solarium which is opened between 8 in the morning and 22 in the evening.

Showers are also available, both in the arrival and departure area in the airport; their use is charged with CHF 15.

Other services include coiffeur, post office or dry cleaning. Even a meditation room is established for the spiritual travelers who might need it!

At the arrival to the hotel, you will have another pleasant surprise. But it would not be a surprise anymore if we divulge it to you!
